Most organizations run their businesses with a mix of on-premise and cloud applications. Both types are dependent on internal network equipment and internet service providers (ISPs) for communication access. Ensuring that these applications, servers and surrounding network equipment is healthy and available is vital to organizations and their financial wellbeing.
So here is the question. You sitting in your office and you cannot access one of the critical cloud applications you use to run your business. What is the problem? Is it a problem with the cloud vendor? And yes, that continues to happen. There have been multiple cloud outages with all of the major players, and there has been data lose in some cases. Or is it a problem with your internet access, network hardware, or internet service provider? The time required to manually determine the exact cause can take time, and time translates to lost revenue and money.
Having a network monitoring solution in place that can quickly pinpoint the exact cause of an issue, and point you to a quick resolution is invaluable. It can significantly reduce the time required to determine the problem, thus reducing the outage. In some cases a network monitoring solution can identify a problem before it turns into an outage, which is even better.
Some of you are saying, we use a managed service provider (MSP), and they have it covered. Do they? How do you know this? Many MSPs have co-opted the “monitoring” term, but are not providing the service. However, to be fair, many MSPs face significant challenges delivering “monitoring” services. Many utilize third-party vendors for remote monitoring and management (RMM) capabilities, and these solutions are expensive, complex and inflexible. Many MSPs simply cannot afford them, or do not have the technical talent to implement and use these solutions. If you’re interested in finding out if your MSP is really providing “monitoring” services, I wrote a blog on it. You can read it here.
Unfortunately, MSPs are not alone in having to deal with expense, complexity and inflexibility of monitoring solutions. Many of the on-premise vendor solutions suffer from the very same issues. Many small and medium sized organizations do not have the financial resources to acquire one of these solutions, nor do they have the technical talent to implement and use them. They are priced out of the market. If you are one of these organizations, all is not lost. There is another option besides acquiring the services of an MSP where you may or may not get the monitoring services you need.
