When it comes to using a managed service provider (MSP), one of the more important services they provide is monitoring network infrastructure and critical applications. Ensuring that critical applications and the underlying network hardware is healthy and available, and that there is no unscheduled downtime, is critical.
Many MSPs say they provide monitoring services, but unfortunately this service capability can be difficult for many MSPs to deliver on. The majority of MSPs rely on third party software vendors for remote monitoring and management (RMM) capabilities, and there are only a handful of vendors providing these solutions. The solutions are expensive, and complex to install, configure, and use. The licensing costs precludes many MSPs from acquiring one of these solutions, and for those that can afford them, the complexity prevents some from using them effectively.
For the clients, it can be difficult to determine whether an MSP is providing monitoring services effectively, or at all. Waiting for an outage to occur to find out whether these capabilities are being provided can be a very costly exercise for many organizations that they cannot afford.
If you are using an MSP, and you are unsure as to whether they are really providing remote monitoring services as promised, here is a little test you can conduct. At the end of the day when everyone has left the office, turn off your internet router or shutdown an important piece of equipment or application that is part of your service agreement, and wait. Wait to see if the MSP promptly contacts you to inform you of the event. You might be surprised.
